The exam officials to conduct UPSC Prelims and Mains 2025 on May 25, 2025 and August 22, 2025 respectively. UPSC Post List: Categories of Civil Services

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination (CSE) is one of India’s most prestigious and competitive exams. It serves as a gateway to the Indian bureaucracy, offering a wide range of posts in various departments and ministries of the Government of India. The services are broadly categorized into three main types: All India Services, Central Services (Group A), and Central Services (Group B). Understanding these categories helps aspirants align their career goals with the roles offered.

1. All India Services (AIS)

These services operate under both the Central and State Governments. Officers can be posted anywhere in the country and are allocated to different cadres (states).

  • Indian Administrative Service (IAS)

IAS officers play a crucial role in policy formulation, implementation, and administration. They can rise to become Cabinet Secretaries at the central level.

 

  • Indian Police Service (IPS)

IPS officers are responsible for maintaining law and order, crime prevention, and policing. They may serve as Commissioners, DGPs, or in central agencies like CBI, RAW, and IB.

 

  • Indian Foreign Service (IFS)

IFS officers represent India in foreign countries and international organizations as diplomats and ambassadors.

2. Central Civil Services – Group A

These are premium services under the central government. Group A services involve high-ranking administrative and policy-making roles across different sectors.

 

  • Indian Forest Service (IFoS)

Although recruitment to IFoS is via a separate examination, it is part of the All India Services. Officers work on forest and wildlife conservation.

 

  • Indian Revenue Service (IRS) – Income Tax & Customs and Indirect Taxes

IRS officers manage tax administration and enforcement across the country.

 

  • Indian Audit and Accounts Service (IA&AS)

These officers work with the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India, ensuring accountability in government spending.

 

  • Indian Civil Accounts Service (ICAS)

ICAS officers manage accounting and budgeting in various ministries.

 

  • Indian Defence Accounts Service (IDAS)

They handle the accounting and financial advising functions in the Ministry of Defence.

 

  • Indian Defence Estates ServIce (IDES)

Management and administration of defence lands, properties and estates, and ensuring proper utilisation of the land and estate resources

 

  • Indian Information Service (IIS)

Officers here are involved in media relations, public information, and government communication.

 

  • Indian Post and Telecommunication Accounts and Finance Service (IP&TAFS)

They manage finance and accounts for the Department of Telecommunications and India Post.

 

  • Indian Trade Service (ITS)

ITS officers promote international trade, implement trade policies, and represent India in trade negotiations.

 

  • Railway Protection Force (RPF)

Though a paramilitary force, RPF is also a part of Group A services with responsibilities for railway security.

3. Central Civil Services – Group B

Group B services generally involve more state-level or departmental-level responsibilities. These officers are promoted to Group A levels with experience and performance.
