Sustainable Development Report (SDR) 2025: India Enters Global Top 100 for the First Time

Relevance: GS II Important institutions

The UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) published the Sustainable Development Report (SDR) 2025, which looks at how far the world has come toward the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that all UN member nations agreed to in 2015. The report is now an important way to measure how well the country is doing with Agenda 2030. For the first time, India is in the top 100 countries on the Global SDG rankings

About the Sustainable Development Report (SDR)

Every year, the 193 UN member nations’ progress toward accomplishing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted in 2015 is evaluated and ranked.

  • The Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) is the publisher.
  • An SDG Index score (0–100) is determined by the SDR using a wide range of indicators and data points to assess each nation’s performance.
  • The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which sought to reduce extreme poverty between 2000 and 2015, serve as the foundation for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Key Highlights of SDG progress 2025

190 out of 193 nations have submitted national action plans for promoting sustainable development, demonstrating the strong international commitment to the SDGs. By 2030, none of the SDGs are expected to be accomplished.

  • According to the 2025 UN Multilateralism (UN-Mi), Barbados is ranked first, while the United States is ranked worst.
  • India’s accomplishment was to move up from 109th place in 2024 to 99th place (see infographic for trend). Finland came in first.
  • The report emphasized that limited fiscal space, structural risks, and conflicts impede progress. There is a lack of support for SDG initiatives as a result of high-income nations delaying capital contributions to international development banks.
  • Worldwide improvements include reduced child mortality, internet, mobile broadband, and electrical access.
  • Significant setbacks include the loss of biodiversity, the rise in obesity, the deterioration of press freedom, and the increase in corruption.
  • By 2030, only 17% of the SDG targets are expected to be accomplished.
