Introduction to Shri Banke Bihari Temple

The Supreme Court permits the purchase of land and approves the Rs 500 crore Banke Bihari Corridor proposal. In an effort to give pilgrims a tranquil and secure journey, the Supreme Court has also permitted the state to purchase nearby land with temple funds.

Where is Shri Banke Bihari Temple Located?

Located in the holy city of Vrindavan in the Uttar Pradesh district of Mathura. It is located next to the temple of Shri Radha Vallabh.This temple is one of the seven Thakur of Vrindavan temples, along with Shri Govind Dev Ji, Shri RadhaVallabh Ji, and four more.

Meaning Behind the Name “Banke Bihari”

Bihari means “supreme enjoyer,” while Bankey means “bent in three places.” Lord Krishna is seen standing in the Tribhanga pose. This spiritual figure was first revered by Haridas Swami as Kunj-Bihari, or “Enjoyer of Lakes.”

  • “Bihāri” or “Vihāri” denotes “enjoyment,” while “Bānke” implies “bent.” This is how the name “Bānke Bihāri” came to be for Kṛṣṇa, who is crooked in three places.

Historical Significance of the Temple

The celestial couple Shyama and Shyam personally gave Swami Haridas the image of Bihariji that is displayed in the Shri Banke Bihari Mandir. The Lord gave in to the fervor of his followers by appearing in person alongside his divine bride, leaving behind a gorgeous dark image before vanishing.

Founded by Swami Haridas, Guru of Tansen

Apart from having a galaxy of musicians in his court, including Bakshu, Bhanu, and Baiju, Swami Haridas is reportedly the guru of the well-known musician Tansen. Haridas, who is renowned for founding the Haridasi School of Mysticism, was a trailblazer in the propagation of Dhrupad. He was hailed as a key figure in the Bhakti movement and music because of his passionate language and melodic voice, which inspired many.

  • Built in 1864, the current temple complex that houses “Banke Bihari” is a singular example of Indian craftsmanship.

Role in India’s Freedom Struggle

This temple served as the primary hub for revolutionary activity throughout the liberation fight, and it was from this location that the revolutionary journal “Bundelkhand Kesari” was covertly published. It is located 9 km from Muskra and 61 km from the district headquarters.
