Why in News: In a recent special Cabinet meeting, the Madhya Pradesh government renamed the Pachmarhi Wildlife Sanctuary in honor of Raja Bhabhut Singh, a 19th-century tribal icon.
About Raja Bhabhut Singh
- The Jagirdar dynasty of Harrakot Raikheri branch, descended from Thakur Ajit Singh ji, the proprietor of Pachmarhi Jagir, is where Raja Bhabhut Singh was born.
- In 1819–1820, his ancestor Thakur Mohan Singh stood shoulder to shoulder with Nagpur’s powerful Peshwa Appa Saheb Bhonsle in the fight against the British.
- His kingdom included Jabalpur and the Satpura hills, and he was a prominent Gond ruler. Raja Bhabhut Singh was a fierce opponent of the British during the 1857 uprising, using his in-depth familiarity with the Satpura forests and mountain trails to spearhead several successful guerrilla assaults.
- Additionally, he was connected to Tatya Tope, a liberation fighter.Bhabhut Singh is referred to as Shivaji of Narmadachal because of his guerilla warfare strategy. He was later put to death by the British, making him a martyr whose memory has been upheld by Korku folklore.
