Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) Extended to 2025–26

India’s main initiative to transform the fishing industry is the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), which was introduced on September 10, 2020 by the Department of Fisheries under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying. The program, which was first intended to run from 2020–21 to 2024–25, has now been extended until 2025–26, reaffirming the government’s commitment to boosting sustainable fish production, raising fishermen’s incomes, encouraging aquaculture, and enhancing fisheries infrastructure. PMMSY places a strong emphasis on adopting technology-driven solutions, modernizing value chains, and enhancing capacity, with the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) serving as the nodal implementing agency.

Principal Accomplishments 

The nation now accounts for around 8% of the world’s fish production, making it the second-largest producer in the globe. 99,018 women have been empowered and 58 lakh livelihoods have been established by the program.

  • The Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying launched it on September 10, 2020, and it will run for five years, from 2020–21 to 2024–25. Now, the program has been extended to 2025–2026.
  • The National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) serves as the PMMSY nodal agency for carrying out the training, awareness-raising, and capacity-building initiatives.
  • With both centrally sector and centrally sponsored scheme components, PMMSY will be implemented as an umbrella program.

Strategic Projects

supports climate-resilient coastal settlements and offers up to 60% financial support for projects aimed at women. Recirculatory Aquaculture System (RAS) and Biofloc units were scaled up to increase productivity in a sustainable manner.

  • The National Fisheries Digital Platform (NFDP) and the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Kisan Samridhi Sah Yojana (PM-MKSSY), a sub-scheme of PMMSY, formalize the industry and provide one-stop access to benefits.
  • The goal of 100 CRCFV is to make coastal towns more climate resilient.
