NEP 2020 Guidelines for Co-location of Anganwadi Centres with Schools

By incorporating pre-school instruction into the 5+3+3+4 school structure, the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 highlights Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) as the cornerstone of lifelong learning. Guidelines for the co-location of Anganwadi Centers (AWCs) with primary schools have been released by the Ministry of Education in partnership with the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD) in order to realize this goal. This calculated action seeks to improve the convergence of education, nutrition, and health services, guarantee school readiness, and facilitate a seamless transition from pre-primary to Grade 1.

  • Facilities for Preschool Education in Government Schools: Structure for The Samagra Shiksha allocated funds for the expansion of preschool programs and the improvement of the AWCs on school property.

Suggestions:

Schools that are co-located shouldn’t be more than 500 meters in urban regions and one kilometer in rural ones. Give priority to the co-location of AWCs where the majority of the children are from marginalized communities (tribal areas, migrant families, and economically disadvantaged areas).

  • It may be preferable to think about co-locating in Grade 1 schools without a Balvatika or pre-primary class. Separate entry and exit gates are necessary for co-located AWCs.
