Members of the Jenu Kuruba Tribe engaged in honey collection and forest-based livelihood activities in Karnataka.

Known as a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG), the Jenu Kuruba are mostly located in the Karnataka districts of Kodagu and Mysore. “Jenu” means honey in Kannada, which is where the term “Jenu Kuruba” comes from. Their traditional employment of collecting honey, gathering food, and managing forest produce is reflected in this name. Historically, land and forest resources have been the main sources of revenue for the Jenu Kuruba community.

About Forest Rights Act, 2006 (FRA)

The Forest Rights Recognition Act of 2006 for Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers  Ministry of Tribal Affairs is the nodal ministry. To acknowledge and formally confer forest rights to Scheduled Tribes (STs) and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (OTFDs) who, before to December 13, 2005, have resided in and relied upon forests for at least three generations.Preserve biodiversity, animals, and forests; protect water supplies, catchment areas, and other vulnerable places; etc.

Challenges with FRA Implementation

  • Lack of knowledge among forest inhabitants about the identification of STs and OTFDs
  • Legal obstacles and bureaucratic hold-ups
  • Despite a nationwide rollout, implementation is uneven.
