How have governance challenges since 2020 transformed the functioning of the Indian state?

India has been dealing with some big problems since 2020. These problems have changed the way the Indian government works and what it does. The Indian state is not the same as it used to be. India is still trying to figure out how to handle these challenges. The role of the state has changed a lot. India and the Indian state are going through a time.

Transformation in State Functions

  • Expansion of welfare role through food security, health provisioning, and direct benefit transfers.
  • Rise of executive decision-making to ensure speed and coordination during crises.
  • The digital state architecture made service delivery better. It also improved the way things are monitored. This means that the digital state architecture is really good at helping to make sure services are delivered properly and that people can keep an eye on things. The digital state architecture is very important, for service delivery. For monitoring things.

Federal and Democratic Implications

The way the centre and states work together has got better when it comes to dealing with crises.. At the same time centre and states are having more disagreements about money and who gets to make decisions. The centre and states are not seeing eye to eye on these things. Centre-state coordination is very important for crisis management. It is good that the centre and states are working together on this. However the centre and states are having problems with space and policy autonomy, which is causing tension, between the centre and states.

Emerging Concerns

  • We see problems like people being left out of the world arguments about our basic rights and not being able to hold people in charge responsible for their actions. These issues came up even as we made some progress with how our country’s run. Digital exclusion and civil liberties debates are still concerns and we have to deal with accountability deficits, in our system all while trying to build on the governance gains we have made with digital exclusion being a major issue.
  • Governance challenges since 2020 have transformed India into a more interventionist, crisis-responsive, and technology-driven state, demanding a careful balance between efficiency and democratic accountability.
