Thadou people
Why in News: A group of the Thadou tribe, represented by the Thadou Students’ Association (TSA) based in Manipur, has established a global platform to address significant challenges faced by their community, especially in Manipur.
About Thadou People
Location:
- The Thadou are an indigenous group residing in the hill country near the Imphal Valley in Manipur, northeastern India.
- They are also found in Assam, Nagaland, and Mizoram in India, as well as in Chin State and Sagaing Division in Burma/Myanmar.
Population:
- According to the Manipur Census 2011, they are the second largest population group in Manipur, after the Meitei.
Language:
- The Thadou language is part of the Tibeto-Burman family of the Sino-Tibetan languages.
Subsistence Activities:
- Their subsistence activities include animal husbandry, cultivation, hunting, and fishing.
- Jhum (slash-and-burn) agriculture is the predominant method of cultivation.
Settlements:
- Thadou settlements are typically located in forests, preferably on ridge tops or just below ridges.
- Villages are not planned according to any urban design, and there are no defined perimeters for villages.
Religion:
- Almost all Thadou people identify as Christians.
Astra Missile
Why in News: The Indian Air Force (IAF) has approved the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) to manufacture 200 Astra air-to-air missiles for its Su-30 and LCA Tejas fighter jets.
About Astra Missile:
Overview:
- Astra is a Beyond-Visual-Range (BVR) air-to-air missile designed to be mounted on fighter aircraft.
- It is indigenously developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Ltd. (BDL) for the Indian Air Force (IAF).
Capabilities:
- The missile is built to engage and destroy aerial targets with high maneuverability and supersonic speed.
- It is capable of advanced air combat, allowing it to engage multiple high-performance targets.
- It is considered one of the best in its class of air-to-air missile systems in the world.
- The missile is being developed in multiple variants to meet specific requirements.
Features of ASTRA Mk-I:
- Dimensions: 3.6 meters long, 178 mm in diameter, and weighs 154 kg.
- Range: 80 to 110 km in a head-on chase.
- Speed: Can travel at Mach 5 (almost hypersonic).
- Guidance: Uses an inertial guidance system driven by a fibre optic gyroscope, with terminal guidance through active radar homing.
- Launch Options: Offers “Lock on Before Launch (LOBL)” and “Lock on After Launch (LOAL)” options, allowing the aircraft to shoot and scoot to safety after firing.
- Propulsion: Based on advanced solid-fuel ducted ramjet (SFDR) engine technology.
- Operation: Capable of operating under all weather conditions, both day and night.
- Reliability: Offers high overall reliability and a very high “Single Shot Kill Probability (SSKP)”.
Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary
Why in News: A mahout from Darrang district tragically lost his life at the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary when a wild elephant trampled him to death.
About Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary:
Location:
- Situated on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra River in Morigaon district, adjacent to Guwahati in Assam.
- Declared a reserve forest in 1971 and a wildlife sanctuary in 1987.
Population:
- Hosts the highest population density of the Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros, with around 102 rhinos in an area of 38.8 sq. km.
Landscape:
- Dominated by alluvial lowlands and marshland.
- The Brahmaputra River forms a natural boundary to the north, while the Garanga Beel forms a natural boundary to the south.
Flora:
- 72% of Pobitora consists of the wet savannah, including species like Arundo donax, Erianthus ravennae, Phragmites karka, Imperata cylindrica, and Saccharum spp.
- Water hyacinth (Eichornia crassipes) is a significant problem, especially for waterfowl, as it forms thick mats on the water surface.
Fauna:
- In addition to rhinos, the sanctuary is home to leopards, wild boar, barking deer, wild buffalo, and more.
- It hosts more than 375 species of resident and migratory birds, such as the Indian pied hornbill, osprey, hill myna, and kalij pheasant.
Brahmani River
Why in News: Residents of low-lying areas in Rourkela city are living in fear due to the Brahmani River being in spate, caused by continuous heavy rains over the past few days.
About Brahmani River:
Overview:
It is a major inter-state, east-flowing river among the peninsular rivers in India.
- Known as Dhamra in its lower reaches.
Origin:
- Formed by the confluence of the Sankh and South Koel rivers near Rourkela in Odisha.
- Both sources are on the Chota Nagpur Plateau.
- The Sankh River originates near the Jharkhand-Chhattisgarh border, along with the South Koel River, which also rises in Jharkhand.
Course:
- The basin flows through Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha, draining a total area of 39,033 sq. km before emptying into the Bay of Bengal.
- It generally flows south-southeast past Bonaigarh and Talcher in Odisha, then turns east to join the northern branches of the Mahanadi River, which empties into the Bay of Bengal at Palmyras Point.
- The Brahmani delta, formed at this point, is the site of the Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary, known for its estuarine crocodiles.
Length:
- The total length of the river is about 799 km, with 541 km in Odisha.
Boundaries:
- Bounded in the north by the Chota Nagpur Plateau, in the west and south by the Mahanadi basin, and in the east by the Bay of Bengal.
- One of the few rivers that cut across the Eastern Ghats, forming a minor gorge at Rengali in Odisha, where a dam has been built.
Tributaries:
- Principal tributaries include Sankh, Tikra, and Karo.
Lyme disease
Why in News: Lyme disease is a major public health issue, impacting around 476,000 people annually in the US.
About Lyme Disease:
Lyme disease is a vector-borne infectious disease caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi.
Transmission:
- It is primarily transmitted to humans through the bite of infected black-legged ticks, commonly known as deer ticks.
- It cannot spread between humans, from pets to humans, or through air, food, or water. Lice, mosquitoes, fleas, and flies do not transmit it.
Prevalence:
- It is prevalent in wooded and grassy areas worldwide, particularly during warmer months.
- It is most commonly reported in North America, Europe, and some parts of Asia.
Symptoms:
- Symptoms appear between 3 to 30 days after being bitten by an infected tick.
- Common symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and a distinctive “bull’s-eye” red rash called erythema migrans (EM).
- Erythema migrans is a hallmark sign, aiding in the early diagnosis and management of this tick-borne illness.
- If left untreated, Lyme disease can lead to severe complications affecting the joints, heart, and nervous system.
Treatment:
The standard treatment for Lyme disease is antibiotics, such as doxycycline or amoxicillin, especially in the early stages.
