Oropouche fever
Why in News: On July 25, 2024, Brazil’s health ministry reported that two individuals in the state of Bahia were the first fatalities from Oropouche fever.
About Oropouche Fever:
Oropouche fever is an emerging zoonotic arboviral disease caused by the Oropouche Virus (OROV).
- First identified in Trinidad and Tobago in 1955.
Transmission:
- Spread to humans through the bite of an infected midge, often the Culicoides paraensis, or a mosquito.
- Urbanization, deforestation, and climate change contribute to the spread of its vector, increasing transmission risk.
- No evidence of human-to-human transmission has been reported to date.
Symptoms:
- Symptoms are similar to those of dengue fever and typically appear four to eight days after the bite.
- The onset is sudden, with symptoms including fever, headaches, pain, chills, joint stiffness, and occasionally nausea and vomiting.
Treatment:
- No vaccines or specific treatments are available for Oropouche fever.
- Medical care focuses on managing symptoms and supporting recovery.

Charles Darwin’s frog
Why in News: Researchers indicated that the Charles Darwin’s frog may be breeding in unusual locations due to a shortage of suitable breeding sites caused by habitat loss and competition for scarce resources.
About Charles Darwin’s Frog:
Habitat:
- This species is native to the Andaman Islands.
- It belongs to the family Dicroglossidae, which includes over 220 species of Asian frogs.
Breeding Behavior:
- Both male and female Charles Darwin’s frogs adopt an inverted position on the walls of tree cavities during mating and egg-laying, keeping their bodies above the water.
Calls and Aggression:
- Males produce three types of ‘complex’ calls to attract females.
- When ‘aggressive’ calls fail to deter rival males, they engage in physical combat, using forelimbs and hind limbs for kicking and boxing, and may even bite off body parts or the entire head.
Conservation Status:
- IUCN: Vulnerable
- Concerns: Studies show that these frogs are increasingly using artificial objects, such as plastic seedling bags and discarded containers, as breeding sites. This adaptation is likely due to habitat loss and fragmentation, forcing the frogs to adjust to the changing environment on these small islands.
