Nazca Lines
Why in News: Recently, scientists have uncovered over 300 previously unknown Nazca Lines in Peru.
About Nazca Lines
- New Discoveries: Scientists have recently identified over 300 new Nazca Lines in Peru, featuring abstract humanoid figures, “decapitated heads,” domesticated animals, fish, birds, cats, and possible ceremonial scenes involving human-animal interactions.
- Unique Shape: One of the most unusual discoveries is a 72-foot-long (22-meter) geoglyph of a “killer whale holding a knife.”
- AI-Assisted Discovery: These new geoglyphs were discovered within six months, with the assistance of artificial intelligence (AI), nearly doubling the total known Nazca Lines.
- Location and Size: The Nazca Lines are located across a 170-square-mile (440 square kilometer) area in Peru’s Nazca Desert, carved by human hands.
- Creation Period: These ancient geoglyphs are believed to have been created between 200 B.C. and A.D. 500 by the pre-Incan Nazca civilization. They were made by removing the top layers of the desert’s red-tinged surface to reveal lighter soil, forming intricate shapes.
- Historical Rediscovery: Around 430 Nazca Lines had been previously discovered, with most found in the last 20 years thanks to advancements in satellite imagery since they were rediscovered by airplane passengers in the 1920s.

Exostoma sentiyonoae
Why in News: A newly discovered species of glyptosternine catfish, named Exostoma sentiyonoae, has recently been found in the Dzuleke River, a tributary of the Barak River in Nagaland.
About Exostoma sentiyonoae
- Distinctive Features: According to the research, Exostoma sentiyonoae is characterized by unique traits, such as an adipose fin attached to the upper procurrent caudal-fin rays, tubercles on the dorsal-fin spine, a slender head, a long distance between the dorsal and adipose fins, small eyes, and 41 vertebrae.
- Comparison with Other Species: The species was differentiated from its relatives in the Salween drainage of Myanmar and Thailand, particularly E. berdmorei and E. gaoligongense. E. sentiyonoae differs from E. berdmorei by having a shorter dorsal-fin base, a longer dorsal-adipose distance, and smaller eyes. Compared to E. gaoligongense, it has a shorter pectoral-pelvic distance and smaller eyes.
- Significance: This discovery marks the fourth species of Exostoma described from the Barak River system, underlining the rich biodiversity of the region. It is also the first member of this genus found in the Dzuleke River, Nagaland.

About Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS)
- Launch: The National Statistical Office (NSO) initiated the Periodic Labour Force Survey in April 2017 to provide timely labour force data.
Objectives
- Short-Term Indicators: To estimate key employment and unemployment indicators (WPR, LFPR, UR) every three months for urban areas based on the ‘Current Weekly Status’ (CWS).
- Annual Indicators: To assess employment and unemployment indicators annually in both ‘Usual Status’ (ps+ss) and CWS for rural and urban areas.
Definitions of Key Indicators
- Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR): The LFPR is the percentage of individuals in the labour force (working, seeking, or available for work) within the population.
- Worker Population Ratio (WPR): The WPR is the percentage of employed individuals in the population.
- Unemployment Rate (UR): The UR is the percentage of unemployed individuals among those in the labour force.
- Current Weekly Status (CWS): The CWS reflects the activity status of a person based on the reference period of the last 7 days prior to the survey date.
- Survey Administration: This survey is conducted by the National Sample Survey (NSO), which operates under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).
