Exercise AIKYA
Why in News: Recently, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), in partnership with the Southern Command of the Indian Army, held a two-day national symposium titled ‘Exercise AIKYA’ on disaster management in Chennai.
About Exercise AIKYA:
- Meaning of Aikya: “Aikya” translates to “Oneness” in Tamil, symbolizing the exercise’s goal of uniting India’s disaster management community.
- Objective: It aimed to strengthen disaster preparedness and response capabilities by bringing together key stakeholders from Peninsular India.
- Participants: Six southern states/UTs participated, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Puducherry.
- Key Organizations Involved: The exercise involved major agencies such as the India Meteorological Department (IMD), National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Central Water Commission (CWC), Forest Survey of India (FSI), Geological Survey of India (GSI), and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
- Activities: Simulated emergency scenarios tested roles and responsibilities while discussions on technologies, disaster relief trends, and lessons from recent operations were fostered.
- Key Focus Areas: Issues addressed included tsunamis, landslides, floods, cyclones, industrial incidents, and forest fires, with special emphasis on recent disasters in Tamil Nadu, Wayanad, and Andhra Pradesh.
Fast Track Immigration-Trusted Traveller Programme
Why in News: The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has announced plans to extend the Special Fast Track Immigration-Trusted Traveller Programme (FTI-TTP) to an additional 20 airports nationwide.
About Fast Track Immigration-Trusted Traveller Programme:
- Objective: Designed to accelerate immigration clearance for eligible Indian nationals and foreign nationals with OCI cards.
- Launch: Initially introduced at Delhi’s IGI Airport.
- Purpose: Aims to facilitate faster, smoother, and secure immigration processes for international travelers.
- Comparison: Similar to the United States’ Global Entry Program, allowing expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers.
- Implementation: Managed through an online portal with the Bureau of Immigration as the nodal agency.
- Application Process: Applicants register online, submit details and documents for approval.
- Convenience: Approved individuals bypass long immigration queues when arriving in India.
- Validity: Registration is valid for up to five years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.
- Benefits: Eligible travelers can use e-gates and avoid regular immigration queues for a seamless travel experience.
INSPIRE – MANAK Programme
Why in News: Recently, New Delhi hosted the felicitation ceremony for the 11th National Level Exhibition and Project Competition (NLEPC) of the INSPIRE–MANAK winners.
About INSPIRE – MANAK Programme:
INSPIRE – MANAK (Million Minds Augmenting National Aspiration and Knowledge) is a flagship scheme of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India.
- Target Audience: The program aims to nurture ideas and innovations from school students and encourages them to pursue careers in science and research.
- Implementation: It is jointly run by the DST and the National Innovation Foundation (NIF), India.
- Age Group: Focuses on motivating students aged 10-15 years, studying in classes 6 to 10, to become future innovators and critical thinkers.
Significance:
- Fostering Creativity: The program believes that incubating original ideas rooted in science and technology will encourage a culture of creativity and innovative thinking among school children.
- Addressing Societal Needs: By nurturing young minds, the program aims to help students address societal challenges through science and technology, developing them into responsible citizens and innovation leaders of the future.
About National Innovation Foundation (NIF):
- Establishment: Founded in March 2000 with the assistance of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.
- Mission: NIF works to strengthen grassroots technological innovations and preserve outstanding traditional knowledge.
- Objective: Its mission is to help India become a creative and knowledge-based society by expanding the policy and institutional space for grassroots innovations.
Amur Falcon
Why in News: Tamenglong district in Manipur is preparing to welcome the Amur falcons, and the district administration has imposed a ban on hunting, capturing, killing, and selling of these birds.
About Amur Falcon:
- Species: A small raptor belonging to the falcon family.
- Local Name: Known as Akhuipuina in Manipur and Nagaland.
- Breeding: They breed in southeastern Siberia and northern China.
- Migration: Amur falcons undertake a long-distance migration, traveling about 20,000 km one-way to winter in southern and eastern Africa, passing through India twice a year.
Conservation Efforts:
- Legal Protection: The bird is protected under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972, listed in Schedule IV.
- Penalties: Hunting or possessing Amur falcon meat can result in imprisonment up to three years or a fine up to ₹25,000.
- Conservation Program: In 2018, the forest department began a conservation initiative by radio-tagging the birds to study their migratory routes.
- Conservation Status: Classified as Least Concern by the IUCN.
- Illegal Trapping and Killing: Poaching during migration.
- Habitat Loss: Due to agricultural practices and land reclamation.
