Gopalpur Port
Why in News: The Odisha government has recently given the green light to a plan to transfer 95% of the equity shares of Gopalpur Port to Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited (APSEZ).
About Gopalpur Port:
- Location: A deep-draft, multi-cargo port situated on the east coast of India in Odisha, known for its rich mineral resources.
- Strategic Position: Positioned between Paradip Port (north) and Visakhapatnam Port (south), with both being almost equidistant.
- Hinterland Access: It serves Odisha, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh, connecting industries like minerals, steel, aluminium, cement, and power plants.
- Coal Reserves: The IB and Talcher coal fields, holding 25% of India’s coal reserves, are part of its hinterland.
Connectivity:
- Rail: Located 6 km from the Howrah-Visakhapatnam-Chennai east coast trunk railway route.
- Road: Close proximity to NH5 (Kolkata-Chennai) ensures excellent road connectivity to the port.
Gorillas
Why in News: Scientists suggest that gorillas may provide valuable insights for future drug discoveries due to their self-medicating behavior, as revealed in a recent study.
About Gorillas
- Largest Great Apes: Gorillas are the largest species among the five great apes, which include gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees, bonobos, and humans.
- Genetic Similarity to Humans: Gorillas share 98.3% of their genetic code with humans, making them closely related, second only to chimpanzees and bonobos.
- Common Ancestor: Humans and gorillas diverged from a common ancestor around 10 million years ago.
Species and Distribution
- Two Species: Gorillas are classified into two species: eastern gorilla and western gorilla. The mountain gorilla is a subspecies of the eastern gorilla.
Habitat:
- They inhabit tropical forests in equatorial Africa.
- Eastern gorillas are found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Uganda, and Rwanda.
- Western gorillas are present in Nigeria, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Republic of Congo, Angola, and the DRC.
Physical Features
- Size and Strength: Gorillas are powerful, with males being about twice the size of females. Males can grow up to 1.7 meters tall and weigh 135–220 kg in the wild.
- Body Structure: They have large, human-like hands and muscular arms longer than their legs. Their skin is dark, with hair ranging from black to brown-grey.
- Silverbacks: Mature males develop silver-gray patches on their backs and upper thighs, known as Silverbacks.
- Facial Features: Gorillas have prominent brow ridges, large nostrils, and small ears.
Behavior and Lifestyle
- Group Living: They live in polygamous family groups, usually consisting of 5 to 10 individuals led by a dominant Silverback male.
- Knuckle-Walking: Primarily terrestrial, gorillas walk on all four limbs, using their knuckles to support their weight, a trait shared with chimpanzees.
- Vegetarian Diet: Gorillas are primarily herbivorous.
Mammography
Why in News: Two recent research studies suggest that detecting calcium buildup in breast arteries through mammography could be linked to an increased risk of heart disease.
About Mammography:
- Purpose: Mammography is an X-ray imaging technique used for the early detection of breast cancer and other breast diseases.
Types:
- Screening Mammogram: Used to detect early signs of breast cancer before any symptoms appear.
- Diagnostic Mammogram: Performed when there are symptoms like lumps, pain, nipple discharge, or skin changes in the breast to investigate abnormalities.
How Does it Work?
- Process: The breast is placed on a support plate and compressed with a paddle. A small burst of X-rays is passed through the breast.
- Detection: The X-rays are captured by either a film plate or a digital detector, producing mammograms (images).
Image Interpretation:
- Low-Density Tissues: Fat appears darker or translucent on mammograms.
- High-Density Regions: Dense tissue such as connective, glandular tissue, or tumors appear whiter, indicating potential abnormalities, including cancerous or benign tumors.
