Why in News: The High Court of Karnataka has recently taken suo motu cognizance of the increasing spread of dengue throughout the State.
About Dengue:
Dengue, also known as break-bone fever, is a viral infection transmitted by mosquitoes.
- Prevalence: Common in tropical and subtropical climates, particularly in urban and semi-urban areas.
- Severity: While many infections are mild or asymptomatic, severe cases can occur, potentially leading to death.
- Transmission: Spread through the bite of Aedes mosquitoes carrying one of four dengue virus types (DENV).
- Not transmitted directly from person to person, except from mother to child during pregnancy.
- Global Impact: Approximately 400 million dengue infections occur worldwide annually, with around 96 million causing illness.
- Reinfection: Possible to contract dengue multiple times during a lifetime.
- Symptoms:
- Common symptoms include high fever, headache, body aches, nausea, and rash, typically resolving within 1–2 weeks.
- Severe cases may manifest as dengue hemorrhagic fever, with symptoms like persistent vomiting, rapid breathing, bleeding gums, and internal bleeding.
- Risk Factors: Individuals infected a second time are at higher risk of severe dengue, which can be fatal in extreme cases.
- Treatment:
- No specific antiviral medication exists for dengue.
- Treatment focuses on managing symptoms with pain relievers, rest, and adequate fluid intake.
Exercise Pitch Black
Why in News: An Indian Air Force (IAF) contingent is currently taking part in Exercise Pitch Black 2024, scheduled to occur from July 12, 2024, to August 2, 2024, in Australia.
About Exercise Pitch Black:
- Biennial Exercise: Hosted biennially by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF).
- Origin of Name: Named ‘Pitch Black’ due to its focus on nighttime flying over vast, uninhabited areas.
- 2024 Edition Overview:
- Scheduled to be the largest in its 43-year history, involving 20 countries, over 140 aircraft, and 4400 military personnel.
- Focus on Large Force Employment warfare to enhance international cooperation and operational experience.
- Includes participation of IAF Su-30 MKI alongside various advanced fighter aircraft like F-35, F-22, F-18, F-15, Gripen, and Typhoon.
- IAF Contingent:
- Comprises over 150 skilled Air Warriors including pilots, engineers, technicians, and controllers.
- Operates Su-30 MKI fighters, C-17 Globemaster, and IL-78 Air-to-Air Refuelling aircraft in combat roles.
- Objectives: Facilitates force integration with participating nations and exchange of best practices.
- Significance:
- Enhances capability in deploying over long distances and supports integrated operations in the Indo-Pacific region.

- Purpose: Designed to assist governments, regulators, and users in decision-making regarding the selection, procurement, and use of medical devices for diagnosing, testing, and treating diseases and health conditions.
- Benefits Over Traditional Methods: Replaces cumbersome paper-based searches across multiple publications with standardized device information, simplifying the process.
- Simplifying Device Naming: Aims to streamline the naming of medical devices, reducing complexity.
International Naming Systems:
- References two major international naming systems:
- European Medical Device Nomenclature (EMDN): Predominantly used for registration in European databases.
- Global Medical Device Nomenclature (GMDN): Utilized by regulatory agencies in Australia, Canada, the UK, USA, and other Member States.

Salvinia molesta
Why in News: Recently, there have been reports indicating that an introduced exotic beetle effectively eliminated the invasive weed species Salvinia molesta from a large reservoir in Betul district within a span of 18 months.
About Salvinia molesta:
Salvinia molesta is a highly damaging aquatic fern.
- Common Name and Origin: Also known as “Water Fern,” it is an aggressive and rapidly spreading Alien Invasive Aquatic Weed originally from Southeastern Brazil.
- Habitat Preferences:
- Thrives in tropical, sub-tropical, or warm temperate regions.
- Flourishes in stagnant or slow-moving water bodies like ditches, ponds, lakes, slow rivers, and canals.
- Introduction in India: Locally referred to as “Chinese Jhalaar,” this invasive species was first identified in India in 2018 and had completely covered the reservoir by 2019.
- Environmental Impact: Forms dense mats that impede water flow and decrease light and oxygen levels in water bodies.
- Human Uses:
- Often introduced as an ornamental plant.
- Used as mulch for crops in arid regions near water bodies where it proliferates.
