India’s Road Safety Crisis – Engineering Gaps and Rising Fatalities

Introduction: A Silent Public Health Emergency

The road safety problem in India is really bad. India’s roads are very dangerous. A lot of people are dying in accidents. When we think about road safety we usually blame the drivers.. The real problem is that the roads in India are not well designed. The way the roads are built is not safe. This is an issue with India’s road safety. India’s road safety is affected by the design of the roads.

Scale and Nature of the Crisis

Rapid urbanisation and motorisation have really increased the number of cars on the road. This is a problem. The roads are getting very crowded. However the roads themselves have not been improved at the speed. This means we have a lot of traffic jams and the roads are not safe. People who walk and ride bicycles. Ride two-wheelers are especially at risk of getting hurt. Rapid urbanisation and motorisation are making the roads more dangerous, for pedestrians, cyclists and two-wheeler riders.

Engineering Gaps in Road Design

The roads are really badly planned, the intersections. They do not have service lanes. The signs on the road are also not good.. There are no crash barriers. All these things make it more likely that accidents will happen on the roads. Many roads do not have lines, the lighting is not good and the way the roads are shaped is not safe. This can cause spots and people have to make sudden turns, which can be very dangerous and even fatal. The roads and intersections are a problem because they are poorly designed.

Urban and Rural Road Challenges

  • Urban roads have a lot of problems. They have people and things on them that should not be there. Urban roads also have different kinds of traffic like cars and bikes all together.. It is very hard for people to walk on urban roads because they do not have good sidewalks and crossings.
  • Rural highways have problems. Rural highways have fast traffic and no safety buffers to protect people. The roads are not fixed when they get broken so they are in shape.. People do things on the side of rural highways that are not safe, like walking or playing.

Institutional and Governance Issues

There are agencies that take care of road construction and traffic regulation and maintenance. These agencies often work separately from each other. This can cause problems because it is hard to say who is responsible for what. When something goes wrong it takes a time to fix it because the agencies do not work together. The road construction and traffic regulation and maintenance suffer because of this.

Way Forward: Engineering-Led Safety Solutions

  • We really need to focus on preventing accidents on the roads. This means we have to do road safety checks all the time. We need to have design rules everywhere.
  • We should also use traffic systems and think about pedestrians when we plan roads. If we do all these things we can really cut down the number of people who die on the roads. Preventive road engineering is the way to go.
  • India’s road safety challenge is not merely behavioural but structural. Addressing engineering gaps through coordinated governance and safety-first design is critical to saving lives and ensuring sustainable mobility.
