The big problems with running the country since 2020, like the COVID-19 pandemic and all the social and economic issues that came with it have really put India’s system of administration to the test. India’s administrative system had to change and adapt quickly because of these challenges. India’s administrative system is still dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic and all the problems it caused.
Key Administrative Shifts
- The administration that focuses on the crisis is now doing things differently. It does not follow the rules all the time. Instead the crisis administration uses flexibility and discretion to make decisions. It also makes decisions quickly in emergency situations. The crisis administration is about dealing with the crisis and making decisions based on what is happening at that moment.
- The street level bureaucracy is getting stronger. This is clear in the way they deliver health services give out relief and provide welfare support. They are doing a job of helping people at the local level like, with health care and giving food and money to those who need it. This is also happening with welfare programs that are meant to help people in need and the street level bureaucracy is making sure they get the help they need.
- Digital governance expansion through platforms such as DBT and e-office enhanced efficiency, transparency, and speed.
Theoretical Interpretation
- This time is about changing the way things are done. We are moving away from a system where people have to follow a lot of rules. The new way is more flexible. Takes into account what the citizens need. It is like the New Public Service. It works with a lot of people and groups to get things done. The period is about making this new system work so it is more about the citizens and what they want. The New Public Service is a part of this and it helps to make the government more responsive, to the people.
- The challenges are out in the open now. We can see the challenges, for what they’re. These challenges are no longer hidden from us. The challenges are there.
- There are some problems with the way things are being handled. We have gaps, in what we can do people are not working together like they should. Nobody is really answering for what is going on. These things show that just making things up as we go along is not working. The limits of ad-hoc responses are clear. We need to do with capacity gaps, coordination failures and accountability concerns. Capacity gaps are an issue and coordination failures are happening too often.. Then there are accountability concerns that need to be addressed.
- Overall, post-2020 governance has reshaped Indian administration into a more resilient, technology-enabled, and citizen-oriented system, though institutional consolidation remains essential.
