Kolleru Lake

Kolleru Lake is a big freshwater lake in India. It is between the Krishna and Godavari deltas in Andhra Pradesh. Kolleru Lake helps to control floods and it is a very important place for birds and fish. Kolleru Lake was named a Ramsar Site in 2002. This is a deal because Kolleru Lake is very important for the environment and the economy and the weather especially, for the people who live in coastal Andhra Pradesh.

The lake is really good for the environment. It has a lot of types of plants and animals like birds that migrate from Central Asia and Europe. These birds include pelicans, painted storks and ibises. The lake helps to stop much water from flooding the areas downstream. It does this by taking in water from rivers and canals when they are full. The lake also helps to put water into the ground and makes sure the water has the nutrients it needs. This is very important for making sure the region has water. The lake is crucial for water security and the lake supports this by helping with groundwater recharge and nutrient cycling and the lake is very important, for the environment.

The Kolleru Lake is in trouble because of things that people are doing. The area around the Kolleru Lake is getting smaller because of lots of fish farms people building things where they should not and bad water from farms. This bad water is making the Kolleru Lake a bad place for animals and birds to live. The Kolleru Lake is getting many bad things in it like extra food, for plants and that is hurting the animals and birds that live there. People who are supposed to take care of the Kolleru Lake are not doing a job and that is making it hard to make sure the Kolleru Lake is safe and people can still make a living. The Kolleru Lake is a place and people need to take better care of it.

The government did something about the lake with Operation Kolleru. They wanted to get rid of the people who were not supposed to be and make the lake healthy again. It worked a bit.. To really make sure the lake is okay for a long time the government needs to work with the people who live around the lake and with scientists and, with different departments. They all need to work on Operation Kolleru and the lake.

In the context of climate change, wetlands like Kolleru Lake are increasingly important for climate resilience, flood moderation, and biodiversity conservation. Protecting Kolleru is not merely an environmental issue but a governance challenge linked to sustainable development and ecological justice.
