The Chillai-Kalan is the part of winter in the Kashmir Valley. It lasts for forty days from the end of December to January. This time is very cold. The temperature is below zero for a time. There is a lot of snow. It is very cold. This makes it hard for people to go about their lives and do their work.
The Chillai-Kalan is important for the environment too. The snow that falls during this time helps to fill up the glaciers and the reservoirs that are high up in the mountains. When the snow melts slowly it helps to keep the rivers and lakes full of water during the summer. This is good for farming and, for making electricity from water. The Chillai-Kalan is a part of what makes the Kashmir Valley work. The Chillai-Kalan helps the environment and the people who live there. Thus, Chillai-Kalan is not merely a period of harsh cold but a critical climatic process supporting Kashmir’s water security and ecological balance.
