“India’s demographic dividend may become a demographic burden without skill reform.” Analyse.

Introduction:

Only when India’s youthful population is productive and employable can it be a strategic asset. This demographic dividend runs the risk of becoming widespread unemployment and unrest in the absence of sufficient skills.

Analytical Dimensions:

  • Indians have an unmatched labor force because two-thirds of them are under 35.
  • However, the India Skills Report 2024 states that 50% of graduates lack market-relevant skills.
  • The skill gap is widened by automation and the prevalence of informal employment.

Difficulties:

  • Weak industry connections and a fragmented training landscape.
  • Geographical differences in opportunities and low female labor force participation.
  • Insufficient exposure to careers in schools and universities.

Going forward, match Industry 4.0 demands—AI, robots, and green technology—with Skill India 2.0.

Increase the number of digital skill hubs and dual apprenticeship programs.

Promote collaborations between MSMEs and the private sector on skilling projects.
