Iron Beam
Why in News: According to reports, Israel’s “Iron Beam,” a high-power laser system designed to intercept projectiles, will be operational within a year.

About Iron Beam
The Iron Beam, also called Magen or Light Shield, is a laser-based missile defense system developed by Israel.
- Technology: It operates as a 100kW class High Energy Laser Weapon System (HELWS) and is expected to become the first operational system of its type.
- Functionality: As a directed-energy weapon, it uses powerful light beams to intercept and destroy fast-moving projectiles.
- Development: Created by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, the Iron Beam was initially unveiled in 2014.
- Range: The system has an effective operational range of up to 7 km (4.3 miles).
Advantages:
- Continuous Energy Supply: The laser system’s continuous energy source eliminates ammunition depletion, enabling sustained defensive capabilities.
- Cost Efficiency: Since it doesn’t rely on conventional ammunition, it offers significant cost savings.
- System Integration: It can complement Israel’s Iron Dome and integrates seamlessly with various platforms as part of a multilayered defense system.
Disadvantages:
- Weather Sensitivity: Effectiveness decreases in poor visibility conditions, such as during heavy cloud cover or adverse weather.
- Moisture Impact: High atmospheric moisture, like rain, absorbs the laser’s energy, hindering performance.
- Line of Sight Requirement: The system requires a clear line of sight to its target, making strategic placement crucial.
- Slower Firing Rate: It needs around five seconds to transmit sufficient energy to neutralize a target, resulting in a slower rate of fire.
Vitamin D
Why in News: Researchers have uncovered significant findings on how a lack of Vitamin D early in life can lead to issues with the body’s immune system.

About Vitamin D
Also known as calciferol, Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin naturally found in limited foods, added to others, and widely available as a dietary supplement. The body also produces it when UV rays from sunlight activate vitamin D synthesis in the skin.
Storage and Release: During sun exposure, vitamin D is stored in fat tissues and released when sunlight is scarce. Foods naturally rich in vitamin D include egg yolks, saltwater fish, and liver.
Importance of Vitamin D
- Bone Health and Mineral Balance: Vitamin D supports calcium absorption and maintains healthy levels of calcium and phosphorus in the blood, essential for strong bones and teeth. Without adequate vitamin D, bones may become thin, brittle, or deformed.
- Role in Body Systems: Vitamin D contributes to the health of the nervous, musculoskeletal, and immune systems.
Vitamin D Deficiency
- Bone-Related Diseases: Insufficient vitamin D can lead to bone conditions like osteoporosis, where bones weaken and become prone to fractures, and rickets in children.
- Effects on Mineral Levels: Chronic or severe deficiency reduces calcium and phosphorus absorption, causing hypocalcemia (low blood calcium). This can lead to secondary hyperparathyroidism, where the parathyroid glands overwork to regulate blood calcium.
- Symptoms of Severe Deficiency: Hypocalcemia and hyperparathyroidism can result in muscle weakness, cramps, fatigue, and even depression if left untreated.
