Whooping Cough
Why in News: Incidence of pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, has been increasing in various nations such as China, the Netherlands, and the Czech Republic.
About Whooping Cough
- Nature of Infection: Pertussis, caused by Bordetella pertussis bacteria, is a highly contagious respiratory tract infection.
- Origin of Name: Named for the distinctive “whooping” sound during coughing episodes.
- Severity: Particularly dangerous in infants, with potential complications including pneumonia and fatal outcomes.
Transmission of Whooping Cough
- Mode of Spread: Transmission occurs through respiratory droplets expelled when an infected individual coughs or sneezes.
- Mechanism: The bacteria attach to the throat lining, producing toxins that impair the function of cilia—hair-like structures responsible for clearing debris and mucus.
- Resulting Effects: Inflammation of the airways leads to severe coughing spells and breathing difficulties.
Symptoms
- Initial Signs: Typically start with cold-like symptoms and mild fever.
- Progression: Develops into coughing fits with characteristic “whooping” sound, sometimes causing vomiting.
- Complications: Can result in sleep apnea, particularly in children.
Treatment
- Immunization through Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis (DTaP) vaccines is the primary form of treatment and prevention.

Great Barrier Reef
Why in News: Recent findings from the Australian Marine Conservation Society have unveiled that the coral bleaching detected earlier this year in the southern section of the Great Barrier Reef surpasses initial expectations in severity.
About Great Barrier Reef
Introduction
- Geographical Composition: The Great Barrier Reef comprises coral reefs, shoals, and islets situated in the Pacific Ocean.
- Location: Positioned off the northeastern coastline of Australia within the Coral Sea.
- Size and Scale: Recognized as the world’s longest and largest reef complex, it spans over 2,300 km in a northwest-southeast direction, with offshore distances ranging from 16 to 160 km, and widths from 60 to 250 km.
- Total Area: Encompassing approximately 350,000 square km.
Characteristics
- Structure: Comprising nearly 3,000 individual reefs and over 900 islands, the Great Barrier Reef is of a scale visible from space.
- UNESCO Recognition: Acknowledged as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1981.
- Conservation Management: A significant portion of the reef falls under marine protected areas, overseen by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority of Australia.
Biodiversity
- Fish and Coral Species: Estimated to host around 2,000 fish species and approximately 600 varieties of coral.
- Mollusks and Shrimp: Home to over 4,000 mollusk species and more than 250 species of shrimp.
